Dizzy Swallows

Holidaze

November 24th, 2010

Hello my dears! I trust this finds you all in a lovely pre-holiday glow, stretching out your stomachs for tomorrow’s festivities (or for the months to come). I myself have just arrived in New York city after a very short one and a half days in an abnormally snowy Washington. As I will have rather limited internet and computer access, dizzy will be taking a the next week off. Until we speak again, wishing you and yours a safe, cozy, food-filled holiday!

Little Bits for a Monday – Iceland Edition

November 22nd, 2010 2 Comments

It is a statistical fact that Iceland has more bands than families, so it should not be surprising that at least a few strike a, er, chord, with the international audience. My personal favorite Icelandic export will forever be Sigur Rós, but I recently discovered the pleasures of Seabear. The vocals of their newest album, We Built a Fire, are (as far as I’ve listened) in English, which may help them reach a wider audience but I’d love to hear frontman Sindri Már Sigfússon sing in his native tongue.

My obsession with this little frozen country continues. Stumbling across Brooke’s amazing photos made me want to hope on a plane immediately, just so I could snuggle up with all of Iceland’s furry creatures.

As if the natural beauty of the country weren’t enough, there’s the crazy beautiful, uniquely chic Icelandic people. The 2010 Airwaves festival brought out … Continue reading

The Dark Side of the Lens

November 19th, 2010

There are certain thing in life that I simply can’t live without, and the ocean is one of them. This beauty of a film captures the dark, cold and heavy sea that I know so well. It is also a poignantly narrated account of life behind the lens as a surf photographer. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did. Happy weekending!

M is for Migration

November 17th, 2010 2 Comments

Sitting amidst half packed boxes, stacks of folded clothes, and paper wrapped bobbits, I can’t seem to wrap my head around just how quickly the time has flown. Now, with six months behind us, it is time to head north again; a reverse winter migration. Friday morning bright and early we will be hitting the road west, and then wind our way up the coast back to the Pacific Northwest.

As we say our goodbyes to Texas (at least for now), I’ve come up with a short list of characteristics, quirks, and rules particular to the Lone Star State. So:

  1. Always use a coaster. I once heard a woman exclaiming over her grandchild’s failure in the department: “Child, who raised you!”
  2. Football is God. As Coach Taylor once said: “You live in Texas now, son. You looove football, you just don’t know it yet.”
  3. High school football is especially God.
  4. Continue reading

Finished

November 15th, 2010

Hello my dears, I hope you each had a lovely weekend! I’m going to keep this rather brief so that I can get back to eating my way through the entire content of our fridge. The race went off without a hitch, despite trying to find our way around an unfamiliar city crawling with 30,000 runners and their various entourages. We were incredibly fortunate to be put up for the night in the home of one of Jacob’s good college friends, whose family could not have been more welcoming. Thanks Barrettos!

Me, in black, zipping through the Alamo.

My finish time was just slightly slower than my goal time, but I am still quite happy with it as I shaved 10 minutes off last years pace. Now I’m ready to start training for my first full!
