Dreams and The Imaginarium

March 30th, 2011 1 Comment

Dreams are a huge part of my life. I’m not talking aspirations here, but actual forgot-to-put-on-pants, or riding-Pegasus-through-the-clouds kinda dreams. At night, my mind conjures up the most enthralling technicolor epics, so vivid I sometimes wake up unsure if an event actually occurred or whether a person actually said that. Among my favorites, which my brain obligingly produces on a regular basis, are flying dreams that find me soaring over mountains and valleys, skimming across meadows and treetops, and floating down over lakes. The feeling of weightlessness if so real and somehow so familiar.

You’d think, then, that I would love Inception wouldn’t you? Sadly, while the movie was very entertaining (and really, it’s difficult to say bad things about a film with Ellen Page and Marion Cotillard), I felt that their dream sequences were lacking any kind of real imagination. Instead, I would refer you to the often overlooked … Continue reading

Little Bits for a Monday

For technical reasons, I was unable to share the music I’d planned for today’s Bits. I am, however, always pleased to promote a local band. If you haven’t yet heard of The Head and The Heart, indie-folkies from our very own Seattle, you soon will. This track, “Lost in My Mind”, is off last year’s debut album. Let me know what you think:

When I first discovered the blogosphere, my two favorite sites were Orangette (naturally) and 101 Cookbooks. While the ranks of my Reader have now swelled to nearly 75 blogs, these two will forever remain at the top of my list for their recipes, honesty, wit, and what can only be described as killer photography. I’ve been waiting with bated breath to get my hands on Heidi’s new book, Supernatural Every Day, and was so pleased to read that she is coming to Seattle … Continue reading

Walnut Cake with Chocolate Buttercream Frosting

March 25th, 2011 2 Comments

I am not a cake person. I’ll take a bubbling apple pie, or tart strawberry-rhubarb crumble any day over the starchy, cloying trollops that usually pass for cake. This preference does not apply, however, when it comes to my family’s traditional birthday cake. In fact, I’ll take this cake over the aforementioned desserts. Any day.

I must be breaking all kinds of family code by giving away this highly guarded recipe, but it is really too good to be kept in captivity. Over the years, I have released it on select test groups who now join me in the worship of its ambrosial flavor and moist crumb.

Following tradition, I made this cake for our combined birthday. This gave me a chance to test run my new prized possession: a vintage Foley Sift Chine triple screen I’d pounced upon at a recent estate sale for a measly 5 bucks. … Continue reading

Rattlesnake Ledge

March 23rd, 2011 4 Comments

Our kitchen and living room look out over nearly 180 degrees of the Cascade Mountains. Making coffee in the morning sunlight, I can hear them calling as clear and loud as a gong. My birthday pressie from Jacob was a pair of hiking boots. After years of watching me tromp about in old sneakers, soaking up whole mud puddles, and getting poked by the tiniest pebbles, he’d had enough. While my new kicks won’t see me moonlighting for The Sartorialist anytime soon, they will float me through 12 hours of hiking with a spring in my step and a smile on my face.

Last Saturday, we took them for their first spin, driving the quick hour to the Central Cascades. This area is crisscrossed by hundreds of hiking trails, dangling promises of mountain views, sparkling lakes, waterfalls, the Snoqualmie river, and acres of lush green forests.

From this embarrassment of … Continue reading

Little Bits for a Monday

March 21st, 2011

Happy Spring my darlings! As previously stated, I wait with bated breath the arrival of the sun and flowers of the warmer seasons. Though today dawned as grey as last Monday, I know we are that much closer. I can practically smell the musk of sun-warmed skin, can nearly taste the tart bite of lemonade.

And to get us off on the right foot today, may I present a video positively dripping with talent and genius. This new video from The National stars the silver fox himself, Mad Men’s John Slattery, and was directed by The Daily Show’s writer, Scott Jacobson. Genius I tell you. The song is “Conversation 16″ off the The National’s new album, High Violet.
