Next Steps: Gage Academy of Art

July 27th, 2011 4 Comments

I have some exciting news to share with you this morning, my dears. I’m going back to school! I’ve been waiting until everything was squared away to announce this, so now that I’m accepted and have laid down a deposit I figure it’s about as official as it gets. Beginning in September I will be a full time student at the Gage Academy of Art Classical Atelier! This program is taught by the immensely talented Seattle artist, Juliette Aristides, and runs through mid-June. I am absolutely thrilling to get back to making art full time, and so looking forward to working under the tutelage of a master artist like Juliette.

One order of business that has weighted on my mind with this impending September change is upkeep of dizzy! As a full time student, I may have to cut back on the frequency of posts, though certainly not … Continue reading

Little Bits for a Monday

July 25th, 2011

I trust we all enjoyed our weekend? Some of you may remember my previous post on Alexander Ebert‘s wonderful new solo album. Well this morning as we come down from a gloriously sunny weekend, I wanted to share his outdoorsy, summery video for “A Million Years”. You can find the video to “Truth” on his website as well but, fair warning, it’s a bit intense.

So remember how proud we all were/are of New York for legalizing same-sex marriage? Well the law came into effect yesterday. Have a look at this collection of courthouse newlyweds and all those fuzzy feelings will come rushing back.

I have a sneaking suspicion I might be spectaularly late to this party, but have you browsed BBC’s Desert Island Discs? Founded in 1942, the program features person’s of note, or “castaways” and the selection of 8 records they’d choose to be stranded … Continue reading

On Fresh Fava Beans and Summer Pasta

July 22nd, 2011 4 Comments

Glorious weather not withstanding, summer is a feeling. It is that sense of freedom engrained from our schooldays, of long hours wiled away in hedonistic pursuits. Blue skies and golden sunshine certainly help, loosening limbs and warming faces. Sadly, as myself and others have noted, Seattle is having rather a dismal showing in the seasonal department this year. But summer be damned, at least the family farm is in full force.

On a recent visit we were presented with several beds of fava beans, ready for harvest. They are the strangest bean, growing resolutely towards the sky like so many impudent, fat, green fingers. The leaves are pliable and tender and, according to my mother, can be used to make a very pleasant pesto!

We harvested about a third of the crop, easily filling a large storage bin. I must admit, hitherto my only reference for fava beans came from … Continue reading

Agonizingly busy today my dears so I apologize for this brief post. However! It may be small but it packs a punch. Behold in all its Barbie, shark, yeti, and explosive glory the Beastie Boys new video for “Don’t Play No Game That I Can’t Win” off their 2011 album Hot Sauce Committee Part Two. The video features Santigold and was directed by Spike Jonze.

Little Bits for a Monday

Hello my lovelies! How was everyone’s weekend?

This morning I’d like to share “Future Starts Slow”, the second single from The Kills amazing fourth studio album, Blood Pressures. I first saw The Kills play a few years ago when they opened for The Raconteurs here in Seattle. After the disappointment of so many over-produced, kitted-out “rockers” their spare, two person band and raw, punk-meets-blues-rock sound was endlessly refreshing. By the time they ended the set with “Goodnight, Bad Morning” I was irretrievably enamored. Like their previous work, Blood Pressures remains imbued with Alison Mosshart’s fiercely independent attitude (her middle name must be “Sexhair”) and Jamie Hince’s sardonic appeal. A few of my other favorite tracks from the album are “Pots And Pans” and “Nail In My Coffin”, but I’d love to hear what you think!

So how many of you have seen the newest and final Harry Potter filmContinue reading
