Little Bits for a Monday

β€œIn the summer, at the end of the day, you should smell like dirt.”
― Margaret Atwood

Hello lovelies. Of late I’ve been trying to squeeze these beautiful summer days for all they’re worth, picking blackberries (and making jam!), taming shrubberies, sunbathing, eating al fresco. There has been a suspect chill breeze blowing in from the north, but I’m not ready to even start thinking about Fall.

For today’s Little Bits, I thought I’d share a great cover by Haim (incidentally, check out their humorous video for “The Wire” on their website). This video is from triple j’s Like a Version series, and features the LA sisters covering Sheryl Crow’s song “Strong Enough.”

We just got our first haul of tomatoes from our bountiful CSA and I’m thinking there’s a few batches of delicious salsa in our future. Here is a scrumptious looking recipe from Joy the Baker.

The alternate title of this post is Current Obsessions. Thus:

Current song obsession: “Cosmic Dancer” by T. Rex. Loved it in Billy Elliot, love it now.

Current hairstyle obsession: partially braided pigtails. Slightly more sophisticated than your garden variety piggy, and so easy to do.

Current food obsession: Cookie + Kate‘s Spicy Sun-Dried Tomato and Broccoli Pasta. This scrumptious recipe comes together in a breeze and has been on heavy rotation in our kitchen of late.

Current space obsession: this amazing, airy studio. So completely jealous.

Current style obsession: orange-red lips and nails. Classic. Particularly when paired with a crisp white blouse.

Little Bits for a Monday

September 24th, 2012

There are rare and happy times when a musical cover takes the original to new and, at times, seemingly impossible heights. I’m thinking Jimi Hendrix’s “All Along the Watchtower“, or Johnny Cash’s “Hurt“. Perhaps even Ben Gibbard’s “Complicated“. Over the weekend I discovered another prime example of such. In the capable hands of Ben Howard, Carly Rae Jepsen’s pop ditty, “Call Me Maybe” (remember this?), becomes an entirely new song, proving again it’s the artist, not the material that makes greatness. Bonus that he’s smiling his way through the recording.

Fall is officially upon us, though here in Seattle we’ve enjoyed absolutely gorgeous weather of late – crisp and sunny. Still, the days of tights and leggings aren’t far off. Here are a couple beauties I wouldn’t mind stepping into:

Little Bits for a Monday

How was everyone’s weekend? I trust we are all enjoying the change in seasons? Seattle has felt on the brink of summer for the past three weeks and this weekend was no exception, with both blazing sunshine and blustery skies. As long as the pendulum swings more often to sun, I am just fine with that.

This morning I would like to share a fun, summery video, full of 60’s inspired doo-wop and danceability. The the track, “Why Can’t We”, is off French-Nigerian singer Asa‘s sophomore effort, Beautiful Imperfection. Let me know what you think, my lovelies!

I have always nursed a deep and abiding love of letters. There’s something so much more personal about a handwritten note than the digital coldness of an email. Nowadays it really does take an extra effort to use the post, but doesn’t that just make it more … Continue reading

Woven Fabric Heidi Braids

April 15th, 2011 2 Comments

Hello my lovelies! How has another Friday crept up on us so quickly? What are your plans for the weekend? Jacob and I are heading to LA bright and early tomorrow for the wedding of a very dear friend (well, two very dear friends). Oh sweet sunshine. Not only do we get to celebrate their commitment ceremony in Santa Monica, on Monday we get to do it all over again in Vancouver for their official vows! Like most things wedding related, double is always better. I’ve got my outfit for LA all picked out but have yet to decide what to do with my hair. This super cute variation on the classic Heidi braid, from the Rachel Roy fall 2011 show, may be a contender. What do we think?

I love that this could be as formal or informal as you like depending on what fabric you use. You can … Continue reading
