Beats, Rhymes & Life: The Travels of a Tribe Called Quest
“Tell your mother, tell your father, send a telegram.”
There are few musical groups that have captured and held my attention like A Tribe Called Quest. I take it to be some kind of cosmic sign that they formed in 1985, the year I was born. Though the location and scene now escapes me, I can still distinctly remember the feeling I had when I first heard their famous track, “Can I Kick It?” Young and impressionable as I was, I felt like my head would explode with the range of sound, from the irresistible hook of Lou Reed’s “Walk on the Wild Side” through seven other samples from the late 60s and early 70s.
