Waiting

September 4th, 2015 1 Comment

They call it an estimated due date. Yet after 40 weeks of responding to seemingly endless “When are you due?” inquiries, one does tend to put more weight than is strictly prudent on said date. For us, yesterday was that day. September 3rd. The great Response. But instead of having a baby (in fairness, only 5% of women give birth on their due date), I spent the day tidying up for the umpteenth time and engaging in a bit of light pruning. I’m fairly sure that in my case, the so called “nesting” period right before labor will be difficult to recognize since I’ve already been spied on a step-stool, scrubbing the bathroom ceiling. Yeah.

At any rate, I thought this might be a good time to give you a look at a project I recently completed for the nursery. Designed on a whim, and completely hand-sewn, this little mobile … Continue reading

Of Rhubarb and Nurseries

May 26th, 2015

Hello darlings. I hope you are well and enjoying the warmth of spring! Things have quietly been humming along here. My prized peonies have started to bloom, the days are fast approaching the timbre of early summer, and at nearly 26 weeks my belly now resembles a soccer ball stuffed under my shirt (if soccer balls could kick).

One of my favorite spoils of this time of year are the firm, ruddy stalks of rhubarb gracing the farmer’s market bins. A few days ago I went on something of a rhubarb baking binge, transforming several pounds into a pot of silky compote and one fluffy clafoutis.

My normally sure fingers seem to be suffering the brunt of the fabled pregnancy clumsiness, and for the first time in memory egg met floor whilst I was cooking.

The results where nonetheless scrumptious, with that tangy, hearty, sweet bite that only rhubarb can … Continue reading

Gilding the Nest

April 17th, 2015

Hello all you wonderful people! Happy Friday to you, and a beautiful sunny day it is at that.

First off I wanted to share a truly lovely song for your afternoon. It’s no secret that I like a good cover, still less that I love harmony, and this represents both with a vengeance. Performed by The Staves, a sister trio out of England, this take on The Boss’ “I”m on Fire” is ethereal and completely gorgeous. Even better, check out this version with Bon Iver‘s Justin Vernon, who produced the sister’s second album, If I Was.

Things have been moving along for us; time streaming along in its relentless flow. Yesterday marked the half way point in my pregnancy, which is at once a surreal and wonderful feeling. We’re suddenly extremely aware of the narrowing weeks between us and the birth of our little one, and … Continue reading

Meet Haku

October 3rd, 2014 1 Comment

World, meet the newest addition to our little family: Haku! He is a 10 week old Australian Labradoodle, and will be about 50-60 pounds when full grown. We just brought him home two days ago and can’t believe our luck.

He is such a little lovebug and has completely captured our hearts already…just look at that face! And he has the sweet natured personality to go along with it.

After a very difficult month of familial and personal loss, he is a fluffy beacon of love and life. I somehow didn’t capture it in these photos but he has a white blaze right over his heart to mark where it shines through.

Welcome home little buddy!

P.S. I apologize in advance if I start posting too many puppy photos.Continue reading

Gold Day by Sparklehorse on Grooveshark

Taking a breather from our Honeymoon adventures, I thought I’d give you a glimpse into our more recent days. They slip by towards summer with a welcome pull. I can feel the heat shimmering just over the horizon. In the meantime, I cherish these days of blooming flowers, good food, and dear friends.

We bought an immaculate and extensive set of Spode Rosalie china at the most recent Queen Anne Blocksale. Planning to sell shortly. Any takers?

Recent sun allowed me to process last year’s lavender, which been patiently drying. The pillowcase and rolling pin method answered admirably.

Our first BBQ of the season was one for the books, with three dozen Totem oysters. Mmmm.

I have watched with bated breath as my brugmansia sent out its first blooms. Amazingly, they opened white before transforming to pink overnight.

A new favorite: … Continue reading
