Little Bits for a Monday

Little Bits for a Monday

May 16th, 2011

This morning I would like to share a video from one of my favorite experimental-folk groups Akron/Family. “Islands” is off their new album, released under the ponderous title, Akron/Family II: The Cosmic Birth and Journey of Shinju TNT. Indeed. Directed by Daniel M. Gahr, the video has me longing for summer sun and tropical beaches…even more so with a certain sister of mine on holiday in Mexico. Sigh.

A few hours ago the Space Shuttle Endeavour lifted off from NASA’s Kennedy Space Center in Florida on its last mission; to deliver the Alpha Magnetic Spectrometer to the International Space Station (yeah, you read that right). As a testament to the digital age, photos, videos, and updates are racing about the intertubes just 3 hours into the mission. The incredible video below documents the shuttle’s launch and entry into the upper atmosphere.

A passenger aboard a commercial jet captured the shuttle as it roared up through the clouds.

Continuing with our theme of stardust and clouds, this breathtaking video captures the Milky Way in all her glory, as well as gorgeous panoramas of Spain’s highest mountain, El Teide.

And if all that wild blue yonder has you wishing for a trip off planet, you could make do with this incredible underwater hotel. The Conrad Maldives Rangali Island, owned by Hilton, offers private suites 5 meters under the Indian Ocean. Encased in plexiglass, the suite is only accessible via a spiral staircase. Hello new dream destination.
