Little Bits for a Monday

November 11th, 2013

Hello my lovelies! Today I am thrilled to share with you a band that has been on repeat in our home for the last month. Wouldn’t you know, it is another Swede. Karin Dreijer Andersson goes by the stage name Fever Ray, but you may also recognize her voice from the electronic music duo, The Knife, which consists of Karin and her brother Olof. Her debut, self-titled album is one of those rare finds which I am happy to listen to beginning to end. Over and over. Everyday. Below, you can hear my favorite track, “When I Grow Up.”

Speaking of the Swedes, have you heard of Hövding, the invisible bike helmet? Try and spot it in the photo below, and if that interests you, be sure to watch their 3 minute documentary video here.

What happens to childhood in these technology-crazed days? It seems more and … Continue reading

Hello my dears, I hope you each had a lovely weekend! I’m going to keep this rather brief so that I can get back to eating my way through the entire content of our fridge. The race went off without a hitch, despite trying to find our way around an unfamiliar city crawling with 30,000 runners and their various entourages. We were incredibly fortunate to be put up for the night in the home of one of Jacob’s good college friends, whose family could not have been more welcoming. Thanks Barrettos!

Me, in black, zipping through the Alamo.

My finish time was just slightly slower than my goal time, but I am still quite happy with it as I shaved 10 minutes off last years pace. Now I’m ready to start training for my first full!

Game Face

This Sunday I am running my third half marathon. Third time means old hat right? Wrong. This will be the first half for which I’ve set myself a time goal, and a rather ambitious one at that. So I must admit, I’ve been having a small case of pre-race jitters. Enter this video that I just found on The Year in Pictures. It is an unapologetic testosterone fest and promo for Versus TV, but there’s something in its retro un-artsiness that is rather appealing.

My one critique is that they threw in hunting which, while it may be deemed a sport, I don’t really find very “sporting”. Maybe if the deer had a rifle too…Still, when you need to get your game face on and Coach Taylor is nowhere to be found, there’s nothing like a good old fashioned sports montage. Or perhaps watching the NZ All Blacks perform Continue reading

The sun rises at 6:30. By 7:00, the temperature is pushing 80 degrees. It is for this reason alone that I force myself out of bed no later than 6:00am to go running. The trouble with this, however, is I have never been an early riser. My natural inclination is to wake at the more amiable 7:30am. This has spawned an ongoing battle of wills between my brain and my body. This morning my body won, smiling victoriously as, heavy-lidded, I snuggled deeper into our soft sheets with the fan whirring gently overhead. When I truly woke up around 8am I was determined that clocks would not dictate my life. So what if it was past my usual hour. After nearly two months of Texas heat, I must be at least slightly acclimatized, no? Hey, yesterday I walked all the way to the store and back in jeans. And didn’t … Continue reading
